Picturephone Classes for Overseas Students

Sow the seeds of peace in the hearts of people

We started to give peace education classes for overseas students here in Hiroshima, using picturephone equipment.

"I feel very sorrowful when I think that a single atomic bomb killed many people. I believe that the war should have never happened." "I feel grateful and have learned a lot from listening to Ms. Matsubara. She told me a kind of story that I have never read in a textbook nor I have never experienced." "Listening to survivors' experiences, we learn the cruelty of the atomic bomb and feel victims' sorrow and anger." These are video and e-mail messages sent by the students who listened to survivors' stories in the picturephone classes.

Teachers noted that in ordinary classes students could not learn enough about Hiroshma. But listening to survivors experiences first-hand helps students to understand the sorrows of the victims. Also, meeting survivors who are living their lives with vigor and courage makes students think about what war means and what peace is.

In the peace education class using picturephone equipment, I have found a major advantage. Students can listen to survivors' experiences in their classrooms and understand first-hand the cruelty and tragedies of atomic bombs and wars. Students can realize how important it is to create and preserve world peace. Meanwhile, for the survivors, they can tell their experiences in their home country and still convey messages of peace to the entire world.

We always welcome any organizations
and
individuals who are interested in having picturephone classes.

Picturephone class is a means of communication not available to us before. However, we see this picturephone class as a wonderful means to convey the message of peace. We would like to continue the expansion of this project and conduct more peace education class in overseas countries. Recently, technology has developed dramatically, especially the telecommunication industry. Moreover, survivors, as they are aging year by year, are finding it increasingly difficult to tell their experiences. Under these circumstances, we thought we had to find other ways to spread the message of Hiroshima. Now we think that if we have wisdom and courage we can continue peace activities in many new ways. We will continue working hard to sow the seeds of peace,so if you are interested in picturephone classes, please contact us.
