Last year, November 10, 2000, Miyoko Matsubata gave peace education classes here in Hiroshima for school children in Detroit, Michigan, using picturephone equipment. It was the first time for us to give classes in this style, and I would like to mention that this project was made possible with the help of the Hiroshima office of NTT, a major Japanese telephone service company. The picturephone class was first requested by Macomb International School District (MISD), and about 40 students at Beck Centennial Elementary School, Utica and Eisenhower High School listened to the story of Miyoko Matsubara, a atomic bomb survivor. Miyoko told them in English how a atomic bomb destroyed the city of Hiroshima and also her message for peace. Listening to her story, students asked her many questions including those regarding discrimination related to the bombing. From now on, I would like to take any opportunity to provide picturephone classes for overseas students to convey the spirit of Hiroshima. |
